This system combines a drive motor with mortars and pestles chilled in a liquid nitrogen reservoir
For sample processing, the 2 mL capacity mortars are placed in the liquid nitrogen reservoir. Tissue samples are added to the pestles and allowed to freeze. The pestle is raised and lowered to mechanically grind the sample to a fine powder. Mortars can be held in the liquid nitrogen reservoir to prevent sample melting. All components can be easily disassembled for cleaning and decontamination.
The use of multiple mortars and pestles allows for higher grinding throughput. The motorized unit speed is slower than a typical homogenizer to prevent sample splattering and generation of airborne particles. Mortars and pestles are constructed of durable porcelain/zirconium composite. The rugged pestle has a stainless steel shaft with a hex bit for quick connection to the motor. Mortars and pestles can be decontaminated by autoclaving, dry heat, or exposure to a commercial decontaminating solution. The cryogenic cooler is ideal for chilling, processing, and transporting samples.
